    story

“The first time I heard Sophie’s voice, I was completely blown away.”Jonny Gunton

One September evening in 2013, a woman in Denmark was watching a BBC nature programme, having her TV dinner. Just like any other evening. But this evening something different happened.

The music underneath the programme caught her ear. She wrote the composer’s name down on a newspaper. After a while, she forgot about it and accidentally threw the newspaper away.

Around a month later, she was watching the BBC again, eating dinner, and there was that music again.

It moved her heart totally. Being a singer and songwriter, she started improvising a melody over the music as it played. It was a magical moment...

OK, where was that guy’s name? Where had she written it down?

She spent the rest of the evening going through all her old newspapers, emptying a large rubbish bin, getting a little desperate. Then, all of a sudden, a newspaper fell open on the floor.

    There was his name.

    .....google..... :-)

Not very confident this guy would reply to an email from Denmark, she wrote him a few quick lines and attached a more or less random snippet of her voice.

But the Bristol composer wrote back immediately.

And the journey with Drøm had begun.

Like a box full of gems, the Bristol composer sent the Danish singer more than 50 music ideas to work with, and immediately started composing new ones with her voice in mind.

They were both on the highest cloud of creativity and joy, sending ideas back and forth as MP3s online. They got so caught up writing songs, they even forgot to ever meet up.

Six months and seven finished songs later, they still hadn’t met.

They were both still not certain whether maybe it was all just a Drøm...

Hmm, but then again, there IS music... or is there?

    Does anyone else hear that...?

    For Sophie

Sophie passed away in 2020. Drøm was her dream too.

Her voice was unmistakable: ethereal and delicate, with a strength that could soar.

She recorded all her vocals herself, layering every harmony at her microphone.

Sophie loved clouds and dreams. From the beginning, she wanted Drøm to feel mysterious, with clouds and fog moving through it. She wanted it to be different. She believed in what we were making, and she put everything into it.

Volutus carries her voice and everything she brought to Drøm.

    Thank you, Sophie.
For your voice, for trusting the music, and for believing in Drøm.
    Jonny
